My Travel Story

My Travel Story

This travel story spans several years.

Picture this:

A typical family – Mom, Dad and two kids, living in a typical town on a postage stamp lot. The kids go to school everyday while Mom manages the home and her side hustle. Dad commutes to his blue collar job, over 2 hours each way, where he works hard while the weather is good with the promise of rest when winter hits.

That's my family.

Tired of being apart all the time I had the (maybe) crazy idea to transition my family to full time RV living. This way, we could live closer to my husbands job in the summer and travel the southern USA in the winter. We flipped our lifestyle on it's head and moved from living separate lives under one roof to moving forward – together.

After a summertime trial in an old motor home, we decided we had what it took to make this work. We took the leap, rented out our home, switched to homeschooling our kids and became nomads with the desire to prioritize family togetherness and exploration.

So, from 2016 until 2021 we had all kinds of experiences. Some amazing (saving turtles in the Florida Keys) some not so much (darting back to Canada in March 2020 when COVID 19 hit). It was a time of great adventure and something not many get to experience.

Here are some of our highlights:

  • taking the GO train into Downtown Toronto to see (and dine in) the CN Tower
  • my youngest learning to ride her bike on the hard sand beach at Huntington Island State Park in South Carolina
  • driving all the way to the tip of the USA, Key West, Florida and becoming the stars of a street performance
  • encountering alligators in the wild in the Everglades
  • roughing it in Mississippi and making friends with a family of ducks
  • getting dressed up to explore New Orleans and dine on fresh beignets
  • getting out to a rodeo in Texas with a surprise performance by Keith Urban

If it weren't for the pandemic putting a pause on things, who knows we might have been able to reach our goal of visiting all the states and provinces. And, while the kids are now in high school and starting their own travel adventures, we can all continue to cross things off the family bucket list whether all together or on our own.
