Royal Caribbean Just Raised the Bar for Family Cruising — Meet Hero of the Seas

If you've been waiting for the ultimate family cruise ship, your wait is almost over.

Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Hero of the Seas, arrives in August 2027 out of Miami, Florida — and honestly, I can already hear my clients asking about it. As a Royal Caribbean certified advisor, I've been watching this announcement closely, and I'm here to break it all down for you so you can decide if it belongs on your family's bucket list.

Spoiler: it probably does.

Think of It Like a Theme Park, Resort, and Waterpark — All in One

If you've ever wished you could do it all without repacking your bags every two days, Hero of the Seas is for you. Think of this ship like an all-inclusive resort and a world-class theme park had a baby — and that baby was raised on a cruise ship. Everything is in one place, and your family never has to choose between pool time, thrill rides, or a great meal.

Here's what makes it stand out.

Nine Pools. Let That Sink In.

Hero of the Seas features nine pools — the most swim space on any ship at sea. That means three adults-only pools (hello, Mom and Dad!) including two of the largest swim-up bars at sea, plus three family-friendly pools, an infinity pool in Surfside, and the beloved Splashaway Bay waterpark for the little ones, complete with water cannons, drench buckets, and two kids' slides. There's even a Baby Bay for your tiniest adventurers.

You can relax. The kids can go wild. Everyone wins.

Adventures Your Kids Will Talk About Forever

Crown's Edge is a sky-high obstacle course that suspends brave adventurers 154 feet above the ocean. Category 6 — the largest waterpark at sea — features six slides, including the first-ever funnel raft slide at sea. The FlowRider surf simulator is back and better than ever, with teen-only sessions so no one gets left out.

And for the crew who prefers their thrills a little more low-key? Mini golf, rock climbing, pickleball, and basketball round out the adventure lineup. There's truly something for every thrill threshold in your family.

28 Dining Venues — Picky Eaters, Rejoice

This is where Hero of the Seas really knocks it out of the park. With 28 dining options, everyone gets their best bite every day — even the kid who "only eats pizza." (Sorrento's has you covered, all day and into late night.)

What gets me genuinely excited — and I think you'll love this too — are the new hands-on cooking classes where families cook and eat what they make together. It's one of those rare vacation experiences that's fun, educational, and delicious all at once.

For a special night out (while the kids are in the kids' club, perhaps?), the new Orleans Parish Supper Club pairs Cajun and Creole cuisine with live jazz in a stunning early 20th-century New Orleans setting. And the Royal Railway dining experience — where actors bring an immersive, theatrical train journey to life around your meal — is the kind of thing your family will talk about around the dinner table for years.

Rooms Built for Real Families

I know the struggle of booking a cabin that actually fits your family comfortably — and Hero of the Seas clearly had families like yours in mind. The new Ultimate Family Treehouse is a three-deck suite with a rooftop terrace, private whirlpool, a dedicated teen hideout with its own spiral staircase and game room, and separate bedrooms each with their own bathroom and balcony.

The Ultimate Family Townhouse even features an in-suite slide and private movie theater — which, let's be honest, is every kid's dream.

More budget-conscious options like Family Ocean View Balconies (sleeping up to six!) and comfortable interior rooms mean there's a fit for every family and every budget.

Oh, and You Stop at CocoCay

Every sailing includes a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay — Royal Caribbean's private island, voted Best Private Island six years running by Travel Weekly readers. Seven beaches, five pools, and Thrill Waterpark with 14 waterslides and the Caribbean's largest wave pool. It's basically another full vacation day built right into your itinerary.
